Deerskin Leather Handbag Maintenance

Do you know ‘Deerskin’ leather and what it meant? After Nappa leather ,  we explore what exactly Deerskin leather is and how to maintain it.

ABOUT DEERSKIN LEATHER

Deerskin Leather is a leather created from the hide of deers. Historically, Deerskin Leather was popularised by Native Americans and the American frontier culture. They generally used it for clothing and moccasins. Today Deerskin Leather is used for a wide variety of items including shoes, coats and luxury handbags.

Deerskin Leather isn’t a mass produced material, therefore it has exclusive connotations and luxury appeal. Due to this, Deerskin is  popular with fashion houses and designers including Prada. For those looking for a cheaper version of Deerskin, Cowhide leather may be a suitable alternative.

This high-quality leather has a number of benefits ranging from feeling soft, to its durability and breathability. Being a lightweight and thin leather also ensures that Deerskin has stretch. Another popular characteristic of Deerskin Leather is that even when it gets wet and dries, the soft texture still remains.

Deerskin can come as an unfinished leather which makes it very soft, but unfortunately not water or stain resistant, so we recommend using a protective product (such as Dermo Protect) to protect this leather and ensure its longevity. You can also find Deerskin Leather which is finished or micro pigmented (Dermo Protect is also suitable for use on this type of Deerskin). To maintain its condition, it is key to regularly clean Deerskin Leather with a water-based product such as Sensitive Cleanse. Please note, we do not recommend undertaking any DIY stain removal treatments on Deerskin Leather, such as using baby powder to draw out grease etc.

DEERSKIN LEATHER BEFORE & AFTER

If your Deerskin leather handbag is looking a little worse for wear, send it into The Handbag Spa for our team to asses. Here it can undergo treatments to clean and restore its appearance.

This customer discovered a can of hairspray had leaked inside her Prada handbag. The incident caused a stain and even flattened the leather’s natural grain. Unfortunately, there isn’t a treatment which can rectify a flattened grain pattern. We undertook our Full Clean, Stain Removal and Colour Restoration treatments. This combination definitely did the handbag wonders! Now it’s hard to tell that the grain pattern is flatter than the rest of the bag.

Deerskin is such a luxurious and soft leather, that you definitely want to keep it looking good! In this case, our customer had tried cleaning up the stains herself. This had led to her rubbing the leather and losing some of the grain pattern – something we don’t recommend! The technician was able to reduce the mile stain by using their specialist cleaning techniques.
